“Ni Kwa Ajili Ya Watoto”   “It’s about the Children”

Hotep Family,

We are so excited for the 6265-6266 school year to begin.  We miss our returning scholars and can’t wait to build new bonds with our new scholars.    This year’s Imhotep theme is “Ni Kwa Ajili Ya Watoto”.  It means “it’s about the Children”.  This is a reminder that we are working to create a student-centered environment.  Imhotep is focused on student achievement outcomes, scholar safety and having a peaceful and positive environment for our scholars.

As we focus on improving student academic outcomes, all of the elders of this community must work together.  We are excited that we have hired three instructional coaches to work with and serve our teaching and learning community.  We also are establishing additional tutorial support programs that will be offered after school and on Saturdays.  We also must partner with parents to support our scholars.  Parents, please make sure you have Schoology access to assist your scholar in time management of his/her assignments.  A big part of student achievement is homework.  We all need to support, encourage and help our scholars manage their academic expectations.

Scholars do not think that our theme strictly relies on everyone else to produce the desired student outcomes.  The biggest determinant of our success will be YOU, our scholars.  The principle of Kujichagulia, self-determination, comes to mind.  While our elder community will support you, your commitment to academic excellence and a peaceful school environment is imperative to our success.  Are you going to make that extra effort to go to Saturday school for support?  Are you going to work to resolve disagreements peacefully in mediation?  Are you going to live our principles of Ma’at and the Nguzo Saba?   That is the commitment we need you to make to your future.

We can do great things when school elders, parents and scholars work with Ujima focused on a community goal.  When we disagree or the work gets really hard, remember, it’s about our children.  No task or challenge is more important than our scholars’ future.

In the Service of Our Youth,
